For Parents Weary of the Green

Author : Mary Fagan
Throughout the process of teaching our children about personal finance, parents have the opportunity to learn even more about saving money than the children. This can be highlighted very easily by asking yourself if you can account for all the money you had in hand yesterday. I thought not. There are subtle ways this erosion of your wallet takes place, taking it from pleasantly plump to Twiggy-like. You must be aware of the techniques and learn to counter them. Let me provide you with some of these tips for parents that are sure to draw some interest.Number one is to watch for the offer by your teenagers to run errands at the store for you. This is a ruse. They will take your $20, buy your milk and bread, and before it's in the fridge, they are out the door with the rest of your change - for their convenience. The second trick of their trade is the "throw the hound off the true dollar amount scent" technique. Check for items thrown in your shopping cart (Get suspicious when they offer to go shopping with you.) that cost $2.50 plus tax, and you are thrown one bill and a lot of pennies along with a question like, "When is the best time to go all the way." Don't let it register any surprise. Stay focused or you will end up paying for the remainder of the cost of the item without even noticing. You have gone over that topic enough times and they are banking on your parental concern. After four or five years of this technique, I put a stop to it - immediately!Lastly, keep a sharp eye and a sharp pencil out for the "keep a tab" routine. This is when they use creative math skills to do some funny figuring of their bogus borrowing and lending transactions at your expense. Look for the same skills honed altering report card grades and parent signatures to show up on their debit and credit line registers. And the more transactions recorded, the harder it is to keep them straight, which is what they are counting on.If you are aware of this basic financial funny business, and take charge when they try these techniques, you will be more likely to have a wallet with substance and kids on their toes. If not, a part-time job is a good way to keep the cash coming in. I mean them, not you!Mary Fagan has an M.S. in Education and is a mother of three children. She also has the grey hairs to prove it. When not watching them closely, she offers a humorous look at parenting at www.motherwise.us.

Alaska Salmon Fishing: Salmon Fishing for King, Sockeye and Silver Salmon

Author : James Zeller
Alaska salmon fishing is closer than you think. A few hundreds miles north of Seattle is the southern most tip of Alaska. Prince of Wales Island is the largest island in North America and the closest Alaska salmon fishing grounds that has extreme fishing success. If you choose not to drive up the Alaska Highway you will arrive in Ketchikan Alaska via commercial airlines, and take the ferry over to Prince of Wales Island or a commercial float-plane will fly you over to the island. There are resorts, lodges and guides that will accommodate you based on your vacation budget.Craig and Klawok are two villages that welcome salmon fishers from all over the world. Coho or King Salmon arrive off the Island of Noyes bringing in the first salmon harvest for the year. There are thousands of miles of inland shores to fish without ever reaching the Pacific Ocean. Most of the king salmon fishing is within a cast of shore. To reach the early arriving king salmon you will need to meet them on the edge of the Pacific as they feed up to the inlets that flow in and around the Prince of Wales.Expect the grandest of fishing trips with the widest array of visual candy. Gray whales, sea lions, sea otters, puffins, geese, bald eagles, loons, seals, majestic mountains, peaceful lagoons, bear, deer, cranes, killer whales, sea ducks and more waterfowl. A week on Prince of Wales will usually show you afternoon showers and then sunshine. The weather in April will be cool but not freezing. Bring a raincoat and pants. Oh, and you are going to see some fish! 30 pound king salmon is not uncommon. 60 pound kings come every year. And don't forget Prince of Wales is one of the best locations to catch barn door size halibut.Silver salmon are 8 to 12 pounds, fight very hard and will show up in huge numbers. You are allowed a 70 pound "fish box" by the airlines on your return trip. You will fill two of these boxes in 5 days of cleaned frozen filets. Silver salmon are later to show up to the party. Plan on a June trip for silver salmon. You have an option, have some of your salmon smoked. Never have you experienced salmon till you have tried fresh smoked.Sockeye salmon, the most red meat of all salmon is next to last to arrive in late June or July in large schools. Sockeye salmon are usually 4 years old and weigh 5-12 pounds. A local guide and boat is a must for sockeye salmon fishing. Try driving your RV up or staying in a log cabin resort for the ultimate experience. You will dine on Dungeness crab, Alaska shrimp, sockeye salmon and halibut. If you have never fished Alaska you are in for the fishing trip that will make memories for a lifetime!Salmon fishing has been a way of life for Alaskans. For the sports fisherman, salmon fishing in Alaska is a dream come true. I've been there, you won't be disappointed!Jim Zeller is the new "Euell Gibbons" for recommending a fishing spot for a fishing vacation trip or afternoon get away. Can a Corporate Executive Really Use The Beautiful Mind; To guide decision making?

Author : Lance Winslow
I would like to comment on the "A Beautiful Mind" movie and the book, which was actually much better. I just finished reading another book on the similar side of John Nashs' assertion of working together rather than competing against. That book was "Co-opetition." By Adam M. Brandenburger (Havard guy)and Barry J. Nalebuff (Yale Dude). Many have been aware of such theory for quite a while and practice such occasionally for the betterment of an industry or through the art of diplomacy, sometimes through misdirection and other times as an experiment (nothing more, nothing less) especially when it really does not matter and it is not really core to our direction and market domination strategy for any given region. I would have to differ from the movie version in that if you tried to run your business in the fashion that Jim Nash discussed in theory you might do well for a while, but would eventually get hammered in the market place, whether or not you actually were able to sleep with a brunette when you wanted the blond with the big bust (go see the movie, you will understand that comment). In theory it sounded wonderful in the movie yet would not take you very far in the cut throat world of business, even though the regulators always want to level the playing field, more often then not they are manipulated agents for the competition as indicated by Adam Smith, Carl Marx and Rodney Dangerfield in "Back to School." The fact is that even the referees of business, namely the regulating bodies who want to see the playing field leveled usually tip it in the favor of a politically powerful and well connected companies which fund the campaigns of the over see'ers (politicians). Once the regulatory bodies find they have been duped rather than bring it up with the politicians, they want to punish all the players in the industry and kick them out of the game, of course this hurts the fans (consumers) and then the game (industry) and then the referees and fans are not needed (read; "When Atlas Shrugged" By Ayn Rand).Unless a perfect and fair playing field exists John Nash's dream of a perfect system and economic structure cannot exist and that is pretty straight forward with the study of human psychology, Machiavelli, Maslow's hierarchy of needs, the prisoners, dilemma or a multitude of truisms surrounding human nature. The world does not work that way, it is not a perfect world and therefore such theories are not worthy of attempt although obviously interesting from an academia standpoint or discussion at the geological societies random coffee house dialogues. The win-lose scenario keeps forcing someone to lose, if we were to really see the true picture here we would find that what John Nash was saying is that you need to take into consideration giving someone else what they want so you can get what you want. I say Obviously John is right. Too bad regulators condemn the greatest contributors of mankind, while the competitors cheat, the playing field is not leveled and the true voter of the monetary unit of trade called a dollar cannot see thru the clutter and scatter of the advertising and behind the scenes truisms of a system which is not all it seems. When looking at the true methodology of John Nash's achievements it is fair to say that being able to put simple concepts into mathematical formulas will significantly help the future of computers capable of fuzzy logic calculate the answers to game theory, war efforts, strategic thinking and competition exposure in business. That will be one of the great achievements of his work, which will be in the future. However one who is at the helm of a business has other responsibilities such as the survival and profitability of the company and using John Nash's strict modeling in an imperfect world is dangerous to the ongoing vitality of a once going concern. Be careful to prematurely adopt perfect systems in an imperfect world.Lance Winslow

Everything buyers should know about MP3 players

Author : Amelie Mag

Nowadays, people do not buy MP3 players with the single purpose of listening to music. They want gadgets. They want many different things in just one device. That is the reason why they buy sunglasses with MP3 audio players, players with GPS or games, and many other strange, yet useful combinations. Some of them also carry podcasting functions. They offer the possibility for radio-like programs, or even TV-like video feeds available for automatic download into the device and for playing selectively at the choice of the owner. The digital audio player with the lowest storage capacity can incorporate several hours of podcasting. Such new uses appeared as players extended and technology improved. Gadgets like this serve to a wide range of purposes, depending on their functions. They are for home use, for personal use, or just for mere play. Studies have shown that American teenagers, for example, spend $350 a year on gadgets, which sums up about half of their discretionary money. On the other hand, average adults spend about $1,200 on such devices. MP3 players are the most popular among all. The fist one appeared not more than 10 years ago, but its history is as large as the worlds. In addition, this happens because technology evolved at a rapid pace, models have improved continuously, and we can bet they will continue improving. When purchasing MP3 players, people take in consideration different functions of the gadgets. They suits variable needs, such as getting on the groove while working out, or just working, amusing yourself while commuting on public transit. As gadgets, MP3 players are available in an overwhelming number of shapes, styles, sizes, storage functions. If initially there were a few models that sold like hot cakes, now variety of choice is not at all a problem. Size and weight are not shallow features to consider. If we take as an example people who go on trips or joggers, they will definitely look for a smaller, lighter player. Why should they not combine it with sunglasses if the present digital technology allows them to use the same object for various purposes? Smaller than the smallest and lighter than the lightest are the goals of all manufacturers and they have a word to say when it comes to competition. Storage capacity and battery life are also features to take in consideration when opting for one piece from a variety of MP3 players. They are inversely proportional to size and weight. They go by the principle: as big as possible, as long as possible. File format is hardly a problem now, since most of the devices allow you to store all types of music files. Since we are also gadgets, we should obviously talk about other functions of the device. In this case, your player is at the same time a video player, a GPS, a camera. What is also important is to screen the device as easy as possible. After all, this is the first thing you do with a player: look for music after selective criteria artist, album, song.Shopping for the right MP3 players is not as difficult as it might seem, but lately only one player seems to be enough no longer. People usually want different things from their players. This is why they choose gadgets. The current digital technology allows you to test your gadgets. When you go out of the house to buy MP3 players you know exactly where to go or what to look for. Moreover, we give you the possibility for virtual shopping. It cannot go easier than this!

Leather Skirts

Author : Richard Romando
As the weather gets colder, a leather skirt looks fantastic when paired with a sweater and boots. Leather definitely made the strongest statement at most couture showings this year, so if you have to purchase a single wardrobe item to jazz up your winter wardrobe, we would recommend a mid length to long tailored leather skirt.A staple of the cold season's designerwear, leather skirts can be seen everywhere. Interestingly, it is more about attitude than fabric and is usually worn by women who are comfortable in their skin. There is a certain confidence factor when you put on a leather skirt and a woman wearing one should be willing to be noticed. Why? Leather skirts are sexy. They exhale sensuality. They make you look and feel like a rock star.Tailored leather skirts aren't just available in classic black, as is the general perception. This season has witnessed a riot of colors including buttery cream, ruby red and even olive green. Although usually worn several inches above the knee, the length does not matter as much as the cut and styling. "The more luxurious it is, the quicker we sell it," says couturier Balenciaga, whose Fall-Winter YOOX Collection is all about leather.Leather skirts are increasingly being incorporated into everyday attire. Business casual is de rigueur and a mid-length tailored leather skirt makes a chic professional statement. Fashion experts say while workingwomen are using leather as a casual option, the runways showcase leather as a symbol of glamour. Gianfranco Ferré's collection features a brown crocodile-stamped leather skirt with a deep fur trim at the hem, German couturier Tani Keller's Spring 2006 collection ensconces a ruby red leather cocktail skirt, while Jean Paul Gaultier's belted wrap A-line leather skirt with flap pockets and side slip zipper details is a classic.Skirts provides detailed information about skirts, leather skirts, denim skirts, long skirts and more. What About Those Brainwaves

Author : James Louis
WHAT ARE BRAINWAVES?Every moment of your life your brain is active. It is pulsing with electrical impulses; you heard that right, electricity! The electricity or electrical current generated by the brain can be measured with an electroencephalogram (EEG), which measures the frequency of the electrical current. This frequency or speed of the brainwave is measured in Hertz(HZ).Now here is the really cool part. These frequencies can be associated with your state of mind at any particular moment. This means that your state of mind, for example being relaxed, frightened, or sleepy...can be "seen" in your brainwave frequencies. The speed of the frequency allows us to categorize our brainwaves into four broad categories.WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT BRAINWAVE PATTERNS?There are four common brainwave patterns that have been well researched and documented. They are:BETA WAVES - 14Hz to 20Hz. Beta waves are associated with normal waking consciousness. They are present when you are focused on activities in the outside world.ALPHA WAVES - 8Hz to 13Hz. Alpha waves are likened to a light meditation. They are prevalent when you daydream. They will become stronger when your eyes are closed.THETA WAVES - 4Hz to 7Hz. Theta waves occur during heightened states of creativity and are found with a deep meditative state.DELTA WAVES - .5Hz to 3Hz. Delta waves are found in a deep sleep state or unconsciousness. Also, Delta waves are common in very deep meditation.FOCUS, CREATIVITY AND CONCENTRATION - THE ALPHA CONNECTIONA predominance of Alpha waves in the brain is associated with accelerated learning, focus and enhanced creativity. When you are focus on something, there is a predominance of Alpha waves. No matter what your profession or hobby, these attributes will increase your productivity and enhance your experience.FINDING THE HIGHER SELF - THE THETA CONNECTIONA deep meditative state is true bliss. Increase your Theta waves and you are on your way to this state. In the Theta state you can lose your attachment to the physical body. You will feel a deep sense of physical relaxation. This disconnect of mind and body allows you to focus on the inner you, the higher self. This is the ideal state to begin your journey into meditation.SLEEP AND MORE - THE DELTA CONNECTIONA Delta state has long been associated with sleep. If you have trouble sleeping, the CDs targeting this range will help immensely. Having a CD that targets the Delta brainwaves will allow you to enter a deep sleep state easily. It will be time to say goodbye to insomnia!Recently there has also been some research that suggests that an even deeper meditative state can occur during predominate Delta wave activity. As you gain experience and comfort with meditation, you may want to try reaching a Delta state during meditation.James Louis writes about things that impact our society. Mastering The 5 Habits Of Success

Author : Saleem Rana

The difference between success and failure is based on behavior. Successful people adopt certain behaviors that help them move in the direction that they desire. Unsuccessful people do not adopt a specific behavior set and tend to drift through life. Here are a few success habits that I have noticed used by successful people. Building these habits into your nervous system will help you to achieve success1. Keeping things neat, clean, and organized. When there is dirt, clutter, and chaos, confusion develops. Not only do you spend time looking for things or sorting through things, you also have to deal with the frustration of forgetting to do important tasks. Order is essential to progress.2. Taking action. The action that is taken is actually threefold. It is first, mental action. Seeing, feeling, and believing in the goal. The second action, preparation. This is a time for study, practice, or researching what needs to be done. And the third action, is, of course, physical. Here the goal is acted upon directly because there is a clear vision, understanding of implementation, and the will to take effort.3. Placing priorities.Since time and energy are limited, a huge goal list often means that not a single one will be done. The best way to make rapid progress is to break the list into four essential goals. Once these are achieved, you can work on the next four on your huge list. Often people desiring to change every aspect of their lives take on too much, with the result that they quickly become overwhelmed and then tend to drop everything.4. Seeking mutual victory. The idea of competition is not often a healthy one. Cooperation is a much higher ideal. The win-lose dynamics may be fine for sports, but, in real life, things are often too complex to gain much from dominance. A win-win arrangement is preferable.5. Understanding and empathy. When we understand where someone is coming from, it's much easier to create rapport and harmony and come to a win-win outcome. Often we try to impress upon others our view before understanding what is happening with them. Assumptions are usually erroneous and only lead to failure for everyone concerned. These are just a few habit traits which if you adopt will make your life easier.Of course, you have to tailor everything according to what works for you. But the main thing is to become aware that success is not an accident, but a way of acting with conscious, willful intent. Success is not some elusive experience. It's simply a question of implementing the right mindset. About The AuthorSaleem Rana got his masters in psychotherapy from California Lutheran University. DIABETES TESTING

Author : tom alter

DIABETES TESTINGRegular blood glucose testing by people with diabetes is important to help control it, and also prevent long-term complications. Good control of blood glucose levels can prevent or reduce serious complications. Frequent testing can show how changes in diet, exercise, medications or weight are having an effect on a patient's diabetes. Close monitoring of blood glucose levels allows control and timely intervention to prevent diabetic complications. Why is testing important for diabetic patients? Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels (blood glucose) gives valuable information as to whether the level is within the normal range. If kept in control, this can delay the onset or development of long term diabetic complications, which can even be life-threatening.People with type 1 and type 2 diabetes can monitor their blood sugar themselves, by using thumb prick blood tests which are available as home kits. Self-monitoring is very important for long-term health. What are the routine tests that are followed? Regular self testing, recording of blood glucose levels by thumb prick blood tests, laboratory test of HbA1c (glycosylated haemoglobin) level a few times a year should be taken.Other tests that should be performed routinely include: urine test to monitor kidney function; blood fat levels (cholesterol & triglyceride levels), and tests for kidney function.Regular blood pressure measurement and treatment if needed.Examination of the feet is also necessary, as the patient may not be aware of loss of sensation from early nerve damage. Also, get eyes tested every 1 to 2 years, depending on test results. How is diabetes and pre-diabetes diagnosed? The following test are the normal tests whoich are used for diagnosis:1. Fasting plasma glucose test This measures the blood glucose with a minimum gap of at least 8 hours without eating. It is best done on an empty stomach in the morning. This test is used to detect diabetes or pre-diabetes.If a persons fasting glucose level is 100 to 125 mg/dL, you have a form of pre-diabetes called impaired fasting glucose (IFG), meaning that one is quite likely to develop type 2 diabetes but does not have it yet. A level of 126 mg/dL or above, confirmed by repeating the test on another day, means that one is diabetic.99 mg/dL and below normal, not diabetic100 mg/dL to 125 mg/dL pre diabetic126 mg/dL and above diabetic.2. Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) This measures the blood glucose after one has not eaten for least 8 hours, and then 2 hours after drinking 75 grams glucose-containing beverage. This test is used to diagnose diabetes or pre-diabetes.This test is more sensitive than the fasting plasma glucose test for diagnosing pre-diabetes.If 2 hours after drinking the liquid, the blood glucose level of a person is between 140 and 199 mg/dL, then it a form of pre-diabetes called impaired glucose tolerance or IGT, meaning that one is more likely to develop type 2 diabetes but does not have it yet. Glucose level of 200 mg/dL or above, confirmed by repeating the test on another day, means that one has diabetes.139 mg/dL and below not diabetic, normal140 mg/dL to 199 mg/dL pre diabetes200 mg/dL and above - diabeticGestational diabetes is diagnosed based on plasma glucose values measured during the OGTT. Blood glucose levels are checked four times during the test. If the blood glucose levels are above normal at least twice during the test, then the person has gestational diabetes. 3. Random plasma glucose test This measures blood glucose without regard to when you ate your last meal. This test, along with an assessment of symptoms, is used to diagnose diabetes, but not pre-diabetes.A random blood glucose level of 200 mg/dL or more, alongwith presence of the following symptoms, can suggest that one has diabetes: increased urination increased thirst unexplained weight lossOther associated symptoms include fatigue, blurred vision, increased appetite, and sores that do not heal. Test results are confirmed only after repeating the fasting plasma glucose test or the oral glucose tolerance test on a different day. What is HbA1c or the glycosylated haemoglobin test? HbA1c (glycosylated haemoglobin) gets collected in red blood cells when they are produced. This gives a clue about the blood sugar levels over a couple of months - the average lifespan of a red blood cell. Thus, this test shows the average blood glucose level over time, as compared to the thumb prick test, which indicates blood glucose at the time of testing. If the HbA1c level is above 7%, consult a doctor for a better diabetes management plan.If the HbA1c level is above 8%, the doctor may change medication or a more intensive insulin regime be used. The combination of HbA1c test and thumb prick test results give a better indication of variations in blood glucose levels than either test alone. How often should blood sugar testing be done? Diabetic patients who are taking insulin injections should self test 3-4 times everyday, especially before retiring to bed. Type 2 diabetic patients on medicines should self test around a few times every week.It is best to check glucose levels first thing in the morning; and before and after meals. Keep changing daily test times to get a better idea of the changes to blood glucose levels. Elephants and Teenagers

Author : Rachel Lower

Something eerily familiar happened in KwaZulu-Natal's Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park in Africa recently. The adult elephants were taken away and the orphaned youngsters were left to fend for themselves. The youngsters started the path to sexual maturity. The young boys were going into lengthy 'musths', as a dog would go into heat, much longer than a normal elephant in a normal setting. The boys ganged together. They started raping and killing white rhinos, an endangered species. They were displaying extreme aggression. The park authorities were very concerned.Someone had the idea to bring in ten adult bulls to "straighten out" the gang of elephant thugs.Sure enough, the mature males put the band of so called 'delinquent juveniles' in their place. The adults were reintroduced, and life turned back to normal. No more killings. The elephants and rhinos were at peace again.Obviously, strong male and female presence's are needed in these elephants lives. The young elephants needed the adults from when they were defenseless babies through the time they were in their elephant 'teenage' years. In the meantime, over in the United States of America there was another gang related murder in your city. Another fatherless, semi or fully orphaned teenager shot a man and then reported back to his or her gang of 'delinquent juveniles'.Perhaps we should take a lesson from the elephants. Risk Assessment in The Workplace. Part 1.

Author : David Barnard

What is risk assessment?

A risk assessment is simply a careful examination of your
workplace, to identify what could cause harm to people, so that
you can decide as to whether you have taken enough precautions
or should do more to prevent harm from being caused.

Work accidents and work related ill health, can ruin lives, and
seriously affect your business also, if output is lost,
machinery is damaged, insurance costs increase, or you have to
go to court.

You are legally required to assess the risks in your workplace.

The important thing you need to decide is whether a hazard is
significant, and whether you have taken satisfactory precautions
to minimize the risk.

If you are a small firm owner, and you are confident you
understand what is involved, you can carry out a risk assessment
yourself. You do not have to be a Health and Safety expert. If
you are a larger firm, then you may want to assign a responsible
employee, safety representative or safety officer to carry out
the task. You can also obtain advice from outside companies, who
have specialised in this type of work.

What is Hazard and Risk?

A hazard means anything that can cause harm. To give you a basic
idea, think of chemicals, electricity, working at heights etc
etc.

A risk is the chance, high or low, that somebody will be harmed
by the hazard.

There are five steps in a risk assessment:

Step 1. Look for the hazards.

Step 2. Decide who might be harmed and how.

Step 3. Evaluate the risk and decide whether the existing
precautions are adequate or whether more should be done.

Step 4. Record your findings.

Step 5. Review your assessment and revise it if required.

Do not overcomplicate matters. In the majority of firms in the
commercial, service and light industrial sectors, the hazards
are few, and those that do exist are fairly obvious. Checking
them is mainly a matter of common sense, but also a required and
necessary action.

You probably know already, whether you have machinery that could
cause harm, or if there is an awkward entrance or stairway where
someone could be hurt. If so, check that you have taken all
reasonable precautions you can to avoid accidents and prevent
injury.

Lets take a closer look at Steps 1 and 2.

Step 1. Look for the hazards.

If you are doing the assessment yourself, walk around your
workplace and look at what could reasonably be expected to cause
harm. Ignore the trivial (for now) and concentrate on
significant hazards which could result in serious harm.

Ask your employees what they think. They are the ones who are
working with the various components on a daily basis, and will
therefore know where the problems are. They may have noticed
things which are not immediately obvious. Manufacturers
instructions or data sheets can also help you spot hazards and
put risks in their proper perspective.

Step 2. Decide who might be harmed and how.

For each identified hazard you should then decide who might be
harmed and how. And of course you will then be able to decide on
a course or action that will prevent the hazard from causing
risk.

Do not forget about young workers, trainees, expectant mothers
etc who may be at particular risk.

Do not forget cleaners, visitors, contractors, maintenance
workers etc who may not be in the workplace all the time.

Do not forget members of the public, or people you share the
workplace with, if there is any chance they could be injured by
your activity.

Cisco / MCSE Exam Study: Creating A Road Map To Success

Author : Chris Bryant
Planning for success on the CCNA, CCNP, and other Cisco exams is much like taking a trip in your car. You've got to plan ahead, accept the occasional detour, and just keep on going until you get there. But what do you do before you get started?Create a road map - for success. If you were driving from one side of the country to another, you certainly wouldn't just get in your car and start driving, would you? No. You would plan the trip out ahead of time. What would happen if you just got in the car and started driving in the hope that you would someday arrive at your final destination? You would never get there, and you'd spend a lot of time wandering aimlessly.Don't spend your study time and slow your progress by studying for a Cisco exam without planning the trip. Schedule your study time as you would an appointment with a client, and keep that appointment. Make sure that your study time is quality study - turn your TV, iPod, and cell off. If you hit a bump in the road and don't get your certification the first time you take the exam, regroup and create another plan. Study until you get to the point that on exam day, you know that you are already a CCNA or CCNP and you're just there at the testing center to make it official. The journey to success is not a straight line. When you look at a chart that shows a company's financial progress, the line never goes straight up. there are some ups and downs, but the overall result is success. The path to your eventual career and certification exam success may not be a direct one, but the important part is to get started - and to get any journey started, you've got to create a road map for a successful arrival at your destination.Chris Bryant, CCIE #12933, is the owner of The Bryant Advantage, home of free CCNA and CCNP tutorials, The Ultimate CCNA Study Package, and Ultimate CCNP Study Packages. For a FREE copy of his latest e-books, "How To Pass The CCNA" and "How To Pass The CCNP", visit the website and download your free copies. Your First Ironman? Some Common Bike Mistakes to Avoid

Author : Ray Fauteux
No matter how hard you train for your first Ironman race, it won't necessarily guarantee that you will reach the finish line if you don't pay attention to details. When it comes to your bike, there are mistakes that are made over and over again by triathletes new to the Ironman and hopefully I can point them out to you and help you realize your Ironman dream. Some of these mistakes I've made myself over the years, and I've had to learn the hard way.Don't have your bike tuned up a few days before the big race. I would suggest 3 or 4 weeks would be the best time, so you can put in some mileage on it to make "sure" that everything is working the way it should. You don't want to be out on the bike course race day and find out the mechanic doesn't have the gears set properly and your chain comes flying off as soon as you stand up on the first hill. It happens. All you should really do the last few days is give your bike the best cleaning possible and make sure its lubricated properly. If its shifting o.k. and the brakes work fine, don't mess with it.This goes for your fit on the bike as well. Race week is not the time to be adjusting your seat height or moving your handlebars. Go with the way it was set all through your training. On average, the chances of getting a flat tire sometime raceday is pretty slim. However, every race you will see people who "do" have flats. As much as it bugs you, take the time to learn how to the change a flat properly. Do it over and over again in your living room. Practice on the back tire. Don't worry about the front. If its your first Ironman, and you're just trying to make the 17 hour cut-off, you don't want to be spending 30 minutes on that tire change. It could ultimately cost you reaching the finish line in time to be recorded as an official finisher. Every year there's people who miss the cut-off by minutes. If you've trained for months and months and have come to rely on your bike computer for cadence, distance and speed etc., be SURE that your battery isn't going to quit on you 10 miles into the bike. I would spend the ten bucks and put in a new battery for the race. Also, new battery or not, make sure the computer is working properly on your last bike ride when you get to the race venue. Sometimes travelling can knock the sensor out of alignement with the wheel and it won't work properly or not at all. This used to happen to me all the time when I travelled by car to the race and had my bike on a rack.If your race is in a very humid, hot destination, I would suggest NOT pumping your tires up over 100. Just put in 70 or 80, go to the start area early on raceday and THEN pump the tires up to your race setting. If its really humid, tires can expand overnight and burst if they're pumped up to the max. Don't worry about dragging a bike pump to transition. Without fail, every Ironman race I've ever done, the race organizers have plenty of pumps around and someone to help you. (usually from the local bike shop).I would really suggest you have "two" spare tubes with you(or tires if you use sew-ups)for the race. Should you get one flat, you don't want to spend the rest of the race worrying that you have no spare left should you get another. In other words, for your peace of mind, take two.I hope these suggestions help you have your best possible race.My name is Ray and after years of trial and error and plenty of mistakes I hope by passing on what I've learned, I can help you reach your Ironman goals. I have built a website that is full of racing and training tips that you may find useful. The name of my site is "Ironstruck"The address is http://www.triathlon-ironman-myfirstironman-ironstruck.comYou can also contact me with comments or questions. How to Perform an Inventory Reduction

Author : Paul Deis

This article is also available on our website: How to Perform an Inventory Reduction. It is an excerpt of a paper originally written by George Miller, Founder of PROACTION. It has been modified and updated by Paul Deis, PROACTION CEO.INTRODUCTIONHow many firms think their inventory investment is low enough? What is low enough? INVENTORY is the largest single asset on the balance sheet of many manufacturers and distributors. It is usually the most expensive asset to own and maintain as well, with estimates of carrying costs typically running 25-30 cents or more on the dollar annually. Therefore, any useful suggestions to optimize INVENTORY investment and associated expenses would be most valuable. The paper addresses how to manage INVENTORY investment to optimum levels, which means a reduction or major redistribution of it in most companies. Optimal INVENTORY levels come down as management makes the operation more efficient by improving processes, reducing lead-time, managing supply and demand better. One cant attack INVENTORY effectively, but only its underlying causes, which will be discussed. Most INVENTORY problems are merely a reflection of management, design, process or operational problems. Current literature on Just-in-Time and World-Class Manufacturing addresses how inventory reduction is a by-product of doing things right the first time.WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF INVENTORY?ent, design, process or operational problems. Current literature on Just-in-Time and World-Class Manufacturing addresses how inventory reduction is a by-proWhy is INVENTORY bad?INVENTORY is a major capital investment affecting cash flow and profitability. Inventory comprising one-third to one-half of companies total assets isnt unusual. There are significant expenses associated with possessing it. INVENTORY reductions can do more to improve ROA (Return On Assets) in most companies than most other factors. For instance, a 50% reduction in INVENTORY will typically account for a 10-25% improvement in ROA! Certain industries, such as aerospace and defense, widely believe that INVENTORY is a non-issue, because they receive progress payments from customers or because they write-off job-end variances and leftover residual inventories. The facts are that these companies need to watch inventories even more closely but first they need to be made aware that there are INVENTORIES to watch. Just because the government or other customers finance the cost of money for INVENTORY, doesnt mean that there arent many other hidden costs, most of which are hiding in burden and serve to make the company less competitive and profitable.Excess inventories subject the manufacturer to additional liabilities for things such as obsolescence, rework, storage charges, etc. Most of these ultimately end up written off and are applied to overhead, but this eventually raises the overhead rate, which increases costs of doing business, which raises itional liabilities for things such as obsolescence, rework, storage charges, etc. Most of tprices, which makes companies less competitive. It really doesnt matter that much (except for tax purposes) whether costs end up as direct, indirect, expensed, burden, or whatever: they all affect profitability, investment and cost of manufacturing.Carrying CostsLets look at what goes into INVENTORY cost of ownership, frequently called the carrying cost and expressed in terms of percent cost of INVENTORY valuation per year of ownership. For example, a 25% carrying cost would indicate that it costs about $.25 to own each $1.00 of INVENTORY each year. These costs consist of: Cost of money The cost of capital to the company or, in some cases the opportunity cost or return that could be earned on the money by applying it productively elsewhere. The cost of money has ranged anywhere from 6% to 18% in the last 25 years. Obviously, cost of money has a very significant impact on investment strategy. Obsolescence The risk of INVENTORY never being used, or needing rework to make it usable, needs to be factored into the cost of owning INVENTORY. In theory (and practice), the larger the INVENTORY is, and the longer it is held, the more likely engineering changes, customer preferences and technological changes will render that INVENTORY unusable. In the clothing industry, it is not uncommon to see inventories depreciate as much as 90% when styles change. Certain portions s held, the more likely engineering changes, customer preferences and technological chanof the electronics industry have problems with INVENTORY becoming obsolete very quickly due to technological changes. Shrinkage A portion of INVENTORY becomes unavailable to the owner due to loss, damage, theft or spoilage. The longer INVENTORY is there and the more there is, the more likely this is to happen. Steps to prevent it only raise carrying costs in other areas, such as security, air conditioning, better control systems, recruiting policies, etc. Quality Factors Allowances for yield, attrition, scrap and rework. This is really more of a function of the process than the amount of INVENTORY invested and is more related to throughput, but is usually expressed as part of the aggregate INVENTORY carrying cost. Technological or Price Obsolescence Prices dont always go up. In fact, in industries such as electronics, prices often plummet due to constantly improving designs, product and process technology improvements. Therefore, it is desirable to minimize inventories in high-risk areas. Taxes There are two dimensions to this: 1) In some areas, a tax is levied on inventories, so the more INVENTORY, the more tax is paid. 2) INVENTORY is regarded as an asset by most accounting and tax rules. Therefore, building large inventories shows profits and profits are usually taxed, usually by multiple government entities. Insurance The cost of carrying insurance on INVENTORY needs to be considered, as well as insuring the space, equipment, people and other resources needed to control it. Space Costly storage space sometimes occupies 25-30% of the total facility, when one considers raw material warehouses, stockrooms, work-in-process storage, receiving, shipping, outside warehouses, MRB and residual storage areas. INVENTORY reduction campaigns frequently help companies avoid the need to move to large facilities, or permit them to shut down or cut back existing facilities. Manpower All of this INVENTORY needs people to order, receive inspect, record, move, count, store, retrieve, post it to the ledger, etc. People are the largest or second largest expense (behind material) for most manufacturers. Record Keeping Systems Software, procedures, equipment and paper must be used to stay on top of INVENTORY. Material Handling/Storage Equipment Conveyors, fork lifts, bar code readers, scales, AS/RS, trucks, carts, bins, racks, shelves must all be purchased, leased, maintained and cared for. Physical Inventories, Reconciliations Must be conducted to ensure that inventories are properly accounted for and maintained. Transportation Must be provided to move INVENTORY in and out of the facility, to vendors, within the facility to different workstations and storage areas. Energy Heat, light, humidity control, air conditioning, refrigeration and fuel must be consumed to make all this happen.WHAT AFFECTS INVENTORY?One must know thine enemy to successfully deal with it. Now that weve discussed the significance of INVENTORY, lets determine why it exists and what makes it go up or down.INVENTORY is not always evil. It usually exists for a reason, however a reason is not always true justification. INVENTORY is frequently kept as a buffer and masks other problems.Major Reasons for Inventory Net Demand Demand derived directly from customer requirements or internal demand. Pipeline INVENTORY needed to sustain the process over its cumulative lead-time through all operations and holding points. Also included in the pipeline are paperwork operations, such as billing, which could increase inventory if not done timely enough. Quality Yield, attrition, scrap, rework allowances impacting amount of inventory and time inventory is in process. Lot Size Lot size considerations include vendor minimum order quantities, raw material and manufacturing lot sizes due to setup and other nonrecurring, lot-related cost considerations and run time impact considerations. Supply Buffer Extra INVENTORY carried as a hedge against unreliability of vendor or factory schedules, inaccurate records, unpredictable quality or other fluctuations tending to reduce reliability of providing materials on demand. It is usually expressed in terms of safety stock (quantity or periods of supply) or safety lead time (bringing it in earlier). Demand Buffer Extra INVENTORY planned due to uncertainty of the true requirement need date or quantity, which may vary due to poor forecasts, transportation problems, or various contingencies. It usually takes the form of larger quantities being put into process, or processes started earlier as a hedge against demand fluctuations. It is usually combined into the total buffer as described above. Another form of demand buffer is building anticipation inventory for seasonal fluctuations and other forecasted demand surges. Hedge Inventory acquired for speculative purposes with the exception that prices will rise later, justifying the earlier investment risk.Other Factors Affecting INVENTORYThe reasons given above are those that apply for a given set of circumstances or basic assumptions about design, processes, etc. The factors below are more basic and can have a more profound long-term effect on INVENTORY: Product Design The number and type of parts, difficulty to manufacture and specifications for materials, reliability designed in and other factors, do more to set basic parameters for INVENTORY than anything else. A product design that minimizes the number of parts, picks easily obtainable materials and components, lends itself to manufacturing with the simplest possible facilities and equipment will minimize INVENTORY costs over the long pull. Materials Supply Specifying quality materials, well suited to the process and application, with easy availability, low prices, reliability of supply and short response time are all big advantages that can facilitate INVENTORY reduction. Having the best sources for key materials or changing existing arrangements can do a lot to help minimize inventories. Processes Good, reliable processes will help reduce INVENTORY, because they will help reduce scrap, rework and attrition, and also provide a more reliable flow of supply, which will help reduce buffer stocks, safety stocks, safety lead time INVENTORY and eliminate much accumulation of INVENTORY on the production floor. Better processes will also serve to reduce many other burden activities, such as inspection, MRB, management intervention, expediting, etc. Better process design, coupled with improved equipment selection and tooling engineering cannot only minimize the amount of set-up and other nonrecurring or lot-related activities to be performed, but speed up the entire process. Reducing set-up not only cuts labor, but also improves facilities/equipment utilization and decreases the amount of time that INVENTORY needs to be invested. This can result in capital investment avoidance, which helps minimize the asset base and operating expenses, which further improves return on assets/investment. Facilities Layout/Design INVENTORY may be increased significantly if this is not done properly. Widely scattered plants, multi-story buildings with inadequate material flow capabilities and processes distributed over many different departments, all increase the amount of part travel, possibility of loss, delays and need for manpower and extra equipment to support the process. Poor utilization of space will also increase the cost per square foot and the number of square feet required to support the process. Service Objectives The required response time and reliability of service to customers has a big impact on INVENTORY costs. For instance, if industry standards allow making to customer specifications from scratch, there may be less need to maintain finished goods inventories. If customers or distributors carry stock, that reduces pressure upon the supplier to maintain inventories and reduce them quickly. Once a competitor attempts to improve service by keeping raw materials, work-in-process or finished goods available, or by making the process quicker and more efficient, it puts pressure on competitors to meet this new standard. Outside Processing Some firms lament the amount of money spent on outside processing charges. This is not a problem unless they are significantly higher than comparable in-house costs. If only a little bit higher, its better to leave them outside if the vendors are nearby, reliable and provide good service. The reason for this is that these services are hard to manage, are frequently outside the scope of the business and are better left outside when fluctuations in customer demand occur, since this reduces the amount of money needed to support underutilized capacity. Planning/Control Systems Systems employed to manage supply and demand and control the production process have a large effect on INVENTORY. The policies that management sets, the education/training it provides and the ongoing follow-up to ensure that these points are implemented and data integrity maintained, are decisive. The systems we refer to are: Front End-Forecasting-Production Planning-Master Production Scheduling-Capacity Requirements Planning Engineering-Bill-of-materials-Change Control-Routing/Process Material Planning-Time Phasing Tools-Requirements Calculations/netting Shop Floor Control Data Integrity-Bill-of-material-MPS-INVENTORY, PO, RM, WIP, QA, FG-ProcessCost Material Costs Material cost increases (obviously) raise INVENTORY. Lowest unit cost does not necessarily mean lowest cost of doing business, or even lowest cost of material, for that matter. These can be deceptive, because as material costs go up, turns do not decrease, because they are being measured on a new and higher base. In a standard cost system, variances may be expensed and not immediately show up in some inventory systems, such as standard cost. Overhead Burden rates of 300%, 500% or more are not uncommon. Having a high overhead rate is not bad, only total costs that are too high are bad. Your overhead rate is a reflection of cost distribution and accounting techniques as well. However, if overhead is going up without attendant drops in other areas and if other industry competitors are doing better, then its bad. Setup and Other Nonrecurring Costs In most companies, these are either part of direct labor or buried in overhead. I broke them out separately here because of their differing characteristics. Many manufacturing people feel that the way to reduce the set-up portion of overall run time is to increase lot sizes. Unfortunately, the attendant increase in INVENTORY and other related expenses sometimes negates setup reductions. Another argument is that long runs increase capacity An interesting ideas, but large lot sizes also take up capacity and confuse priorities. The real answer is to reduce setup times. Labor Content Reduction of direct labor has been one of the few bright spots in American productivity improvements over the years. It has gone down to a much lower percentage than before. It amuses me that some major manufacturers and government regulatory agencies focus so much attention on reducing direct labor content, which is a low as 3-5% in some industries. The area to look at is labor variances, due to down time, quality problems, material shortages, etc., and in indirect labor. In short, reduce the overhead due to other factors increasing labor. The preceding sections should give you a better idea of the significance of INVENTORY, and what affects it. If you have been reading carefully, you have already seen opportunities for reduction, since knowing the question is frequently half of the answer. The next section will amplify and clarify some of theseHOW TO REDUCE INVENTORYAdvice To The BossLets now discuss some specifics for helping to tame the beast. To begin with, lets first set up a program to do this with little initial out-of-pocket costs, a fast payback and subsequent return on investment!Your controller will love this.It sounds almost ridiculously simple, but there is a sequence that one ought to address inventory reduction activities in: Dont bring it in. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Dont order what you dont need. For existing commitments, cancel or reschedule where practical. If you already have it, ship it. Work on eliminating constraints to getting product shipped. Sell excess inventory at full price/cost, if possible. Try to rework or substitute. Attempt to rework, retest inventory, try to substitute it in place of parts that have been specified. Salvage it for cash at a reduced rate Dump it. If all else fails and its really not needed, throw it away, because the tax write-off and lower holding costs alone will make it worthwhile.Try the specific recommendations contained in the sections followingShort-Term ActivitiesSince it is an established fact that most managers think only of short term profits, lets cover the stuff we can do right away first. The author doesnt believe that most top managers really believe this but knows that in order to keep a business going and to keep your job, you do have to show short-term results.Assign responsibility/accountability for inventory reductionNot just to the materials people, but production, sales and engineering also. This should probably be a team, with ONE person clearly in charge, who should a vice president, rather than a summer intern.Get Control of The CheckbookThis is one of the first things that turnaround artists always do to rescue a foundering company. Insist on getting justification for all new INVENTORY expenditures especially A items (most expensive ones). Sign all major approvals and checks yourself. Brook neither opposition nor watering down of this until things are back in control, policies are established, being followed and look like they can stay that way. This has an amazing and rapid effect on INVENTORY and has been practiced first-hand by the author and customers. It requires nearly no cash to implement. Consider having the requisitioner show up in person to plead his/her case of why the inventory is needed and explain all the nasty problems.Use this process to force those responsible to justify what they are doing and why and to think through these policies and their enforcement in a new light that of investment management. While you are doing this, use it to study the dynamics of INVENTORY planning systems and to decide what INVENTORY investments should be and what problems really are. You should develop a matrix of inventory days coverage targets by commodity by product line by planner. Then cost it out and track actual performance. Be sure to track commitments and planned amounts, or you may be disappointed again fairly soon.Conduct basic indoctrination of people affecting INVENTORY most dramatically--planners, buyers, production management, sales, customer service establish some temporary edicts and enforce them until more formal policies/procedures can be established/changed later on. Make sure you know what you are doing before you establish these. Beware of mindless across the board reduction edicts that could result in hurting service and profits.Have your people perform a quick thumbnail INVENTORY analysisStart with items currently on order, in process, or being planned. As Al Agosti of IQR says, first stop the bleeding. Then take away the knife. It always amazes me that companies will spend a fortune to analyze INVENTORY, which is already there, but ignore huge impending expenditures, which they can do something about before disaster strikes. If your company cant save a bundle the first month of this methodology, maybe its too late already. To do this, perform a quick ABC analysis, identifying only the expensive (A) items initially. In most companies, these are only 5-15% of the total items and can be leveraged to provide quick benefits in terms of investment management. After this has been done, get together with the management team, do a quick brainstorm and put together a Pareto chart, showing problems in descending order of importance.Start with a calculation of what is actually needed: Go through all the arguments of why people need more, sooner and then get people to agree on how they can avoid doing that. Cut new INVENTORY scheduled to come in whenever possible. Determine right away what can be cancelled, rescheduled, returned to vendor for credit or sold for salvage. Balance the costs of doing this against the relative benefits. Work on getting product shipped and billed to get INVENTORY relief. Try to match INVENTORY input closer to ship date (reduce lead times and carrying time) Determine if excess/obsolete finished goods can be put on promotion or fire sale. Do so if appropriate. Lean on customers who have cancelled/rescheduled orders to your detriment. Try to get them to pay for part of these costs, accept the INVENTORY, or use these incidents as levers to improve future terms. Look for obvious bottlenecks in the planning and processing of orders such as:- Amount of lead-time and queue permitted.- Lot size and cycle times.- Scheduling assumptions- Major bottlenecks caused by improper manning, defective or poorly maintained equipment, etc.- Build-ahead and buffer policiesSet goals for inventory down to the level of managers and plannersDo this rough cut, for A items first-- more detailed analysis comes later. Set targets by planner, buyer, product line or any other meaningful political or production entity that will foster accountability, which you will want to later measure results against and enforce.Go for the easy wins with the best payback first. Dont fall into paralysis by analysis. You can do more in the first few months than you think. It wont cost much and will provide large net benefits. So far, we have not asked Information Technology to put together any fancy reports or programs, we havent hired any new people, no new equipment has been purchased and we havent revolutionized the way the business is done. That comes later:Establish formal problem solving methodologyUse task teams, quality circles, natural work groups, tiger teams or whatever theyre calling them this month and have these groups identify major problems, opportunities and then address the solutions. Our experience has been that almost any prior training in problem-solving approaches and reasonable coaching will greatly enhance results.Perform stock location auditIn many cases, lost inventory holds up shipments and inflates inventory needlessly. Location audits are a quick way to find some of it. Simply go out to the shop and write down only the identity (part number) and location of all storeroom and/or work-in-process and other inventories, then compare to your records. Dont even bother to count it (thats what takes the longest). You will probably discover things you had lost or never even knew you had.Take your hits for inventory earlyAs soon as you have some idea of the magnitude of excess/obsolete inventory, work on getting financial and general management to write it off, in order to get the tax benefits, where favorable. There is normally reluctance to write-off because of the adverse paper affect on the financial statements and fear of blame. However, its the best thing for the company in most cases, except for instances when stock prices, pending loans, etc, may be affected. Be careful, because failure to recognize true inventory worth might be considered misrepresentation in those cases, though. See your lawyer if in doubt. That depletes my INVENTORY of quick fixes. Now it gets a little harderMid-term ActivitiesIn this phase, more careful planning, analysis, discipline and systems are needed. These programs should start early on and may not bring a lot of results for months or more.Eliminate BottlenecksAs an extension of the short-term problem solving activities, work on formally addressing major bottlenecks in areas such as material, capacity/equipment, paperwork/systems, engineering, personnel/training, etc. A good master scheduling approach should be included in these activities. Focus on cycle time reduction.Inventory Analysis/Target SettingJoe Barcy of Inventory Performance Systems calls it the Divide and Conquer approach. What he meant is that a company has to bring decisions and measurements down to the level of accountability and below (to the person/part/number/cost element level) and also aggregate this information up to meaningful levels for analysis by various levels of management.First, group INVENTORY items at the part number level into categories by responsible planner and/or buyer and commodity. Do this in descending dollar sequence, preferably by projected usage (historical usage, if thats all you can find, but it has its disadvantages). If you dont have the ability to do this by computer, do it by hand for the A items first look up production plans, sales forecasts and buy cards, then extend quantities by approximate costs. Use purchase history, quotes, accounting department support, or whatever you can get. Getting it done fast and approximately is much more important than carrying it out to four decimal places. Remember: money is being wasted while you delay! If your current formal systems cannot deliver this type of information, consider using a 4th generation report writer (theyre calling them Decision Support Systems and Data Warehouses now and correspondingly inflating the prices), or maybe a system designed specifically for INVENTORY analysis and reduction.Analyze INVENTORY on the following suggested parameters:1. ABCD classification (by annual usage value)2. Turnover/investment performance3. Highest dollars committed4. Highest dollars in INVENTORY5. Most longest period coverage planned/available6. Items with coverage/commitments greater than policyOnce you have all this data, set targets, measure and control performance.Data Accuracy ProgramSet up a formal, ongoing program to clean up and maintain accurate records for inventory, bill-of-material, routings and planning data. See my article: Inventory Accuracy: How We Did it In 60- Days! (APICS Intl Conf. Proceedings 1989).Policies/ProceduresWrite/update policies and procedures to guide your operation. Conduct an ongoing education and training program to ensure that people know what to do and how to do it. Sometimes this is regarded as a soft project with indeterminate payback. Our experience and observations have shown us that a well founded and run program to do this is an excellent investment in a companys future. Even simple handwritten ones may be a big improvement, especially if you have none, or worse yet, they are so bad that no one will use them. How to Optimize inventory LevelsIf youre expecting a neat formula here to plug in your numbers, youre sadly mistaken. It doesnt exist and if someone tells you it does, it probably doesnt work. Here are a few ideas that have worked for me: Estimate target days coverage using the teams best judgment for each commodity/product line. Obviously there will be some exception items. The one less approach: Try reducing inventories in doubtful areas a little bit at a time. Pull back when you get in trouble or when you spot a constraint. How To Get Your Own Home Tanning Bed For Less Than You Think

Author : Sarah Wright
If you're the kind of person who likes to have a golden tan, but thinks tanning beds are too expensive… then make sure you keep reading this article, because I have something to tell you that may be of great interest to you.But before I tell you that, I want to show you some simple mathematics. Don't run away, it will be fun, I promise!Let's say you go to a tanning salon three times a week to get (and maintain) your glorious golden tan. And let's say it costs you $10 for your tanning session (although some places can be cheaper or more expensive). That equals $120 a month, agree? Now what if I was to tell you that you can get your own private tanning bed in the comforts of your own home for almost half this amount? It's true. If you were to get your tanning bed and arrange to pay it off monthly, you could make huge saving from having to go to the tanning salon three times a week. And I haven't even worked out how much gas your car uses up travelling to and from the tanning salon three times a week.I'm sure you would agree that having your own tanning bed I much nicer than having to go to the salon. You can tan whenever you like, because you won't have to drive to your own tanning bed room, would you? You can also stop worrying about all those other people who are using the same tanning bed as you. This is why it makes so much sense to get your own tanning bed. And if your biggest reason for not getting a tanning bed is the cost, then think again. Because nowadays you can work out payment plans with nearly all of the tanning bed retailers. These monthly payments often work out much cheaper than travelling to the salon.Food for thought, I'm sure you'd agree.Sarah Wright is owner of the Tanning Bed Review Blog, where she gives free

Self Hypnosis as a Problem Solving Tool

Author : Sanjay Johari
Hypnosis is an art and a science which can be used by anyone as a tool to resolve problems. It is not a black magic and there is nothing mysterious about it.Hypnosis works on our mind. The mind is divided into two broad categories – conscious mind and subconscious mind. We use conscious mind for thinking, reasoning and rationalization. The conscious mind forms a small part of the mind.By far the more dominating part of our mind is the subconscious mind. It has control on how we behave and think in real life. It controls our basic attitude, thinking pattern and the way we react to constant stimuli we receive all the time from outside world. It is also the repository of all life's memories and experience. Our success and failure are directly dependent upon the choices we make in our lives. And the choices we make are influenced by the subconscious mind. While making the choices the subconscious mind tries to re-live the past experience. Among the vast data of feelings, emotions and experience stored in the subconscious mind there will be some more dominant than others. The subconscious mind tends to create the dominant experience again and again. In a way it tries to justify that the dominant experience deserves to remain dominant. All of us want to change for better, we want to succeed and we want to make winning a habit. But our subconscious mind will only work to reinforce its own world-view. Being dominant it will also make us behave likewise. If subconscious mind has such a strong influence on our actions, why not harness its influencing power to get desired results? This is where hypnosis comes in. By hypnosis it is possible to change the belief system or the world-view being held by the subconscious mind. For example, let us say that the subconscious mind thinks that I cannot speak in public. By not being able to speak in public I generate certain emotions which could be self-pity, repentance, sense of failure, feeling of getting a raw deal from the world etc. These emotions have become dominant because of my past experience in life. When I try to speak in public next time, unless I am better prepared, the chances are that I will fail miserably, evoke those feelings again and the subconscious mind will happily confirm that its belief system is intact.By hypnosis it is possible to remove the mental inhibitions. It is possible to alter the subconscious mind's belief system. When that happens the subconscious mind becomes a formidable force which will try to reinforce its new belief system. It will bring all the resources to justify its altered viewpoint.Just by harnessing the power of our subconscious using hypnosis, we can remove our inhibitions which prevent us from speaking in public or behaving confidently. We can remove what we think are our limitations – such as the feeling that I cannot succeed or cannot reduce weight or cannot give up smoking.Let us face a hard fact of life. As adults we are totally responsible for our present situation in life. Most of us are not happy with what we have. We hold the entire world responsible except ourselves for the state of affairs we are in. But the fact remains that we are in the present state only, and I repeat, only because of the choices we have made in our lives. We have subconsciously allowed ourselves to believe that we cannot have a better deal. We have really reconciled ourselves with what we have and rarely attempt to cross our self-imposed boundary. But it does not have to be that way. There are ways to break free from our shell. Now we know that ALL our problems originate from the conviction held by the subconscious mind. There is simply no other source of our problems. And it is possible to change this conviction by hypnosis. This means we have the power to resolve all our problems when we make good use of the power with us.The scope of hypnosis is endless and can be applied to virtually any situation where we wish to improve. The art of self hypnosis can be mastered by anyone. All you need is a firm resolve to improve yourself.Sanjay Johari contributes articles regularly to several ezines. How to Use Your Computer as a Recording Studio

Author : Hans Dekker
A few years ago there was a revolution in recording technology. As computers became more powerful, they started to replace traditional tape recorders that were the heart of most recording studios. Today, computers designed for home use are powerful enough to emulate an entire recording studio, and can be used for everything from multitrack recording to audio editing and scoring music for videos. This “democratizing” of recording techniques has opened up the entire recording industry to anyone with the proper software and hardware. With software packages costing a few hundred dollars and professional-quality audio interfaces costing less than $100, anybody can have a virtual recording studio in their home. Some of the big names in the audio recording field are Cubase, ProTools, Sonar and Sound Forge. Each of these Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) can be used for multi-track recording and editing and have the ability to combine recordings with “virtual instruments”.Virtual instruments are computer-generated sounds that can be played via MIDI. Traditionally, MIDI was used to send music data to hardware devices like keyboards and sound modules, but computers are now powerful enough to emulate sound modules. Instead of hooking up cables to an external device to play MIDI tracks, virtual instruments can be loaded into the computer’s memory to play any type of sound.MIDI tracks can be combined with audio tracks and all of it played back in perfect synchronization. All tracks can be processed with effects like reverb and chorus, and the entire mix can be compressed for a professional sounding result.Although professional sound recording packages can be fairly expensive, you can get your feet wet by trying out one of the shareware programs that are available. They will allow you to see the capabilities of digital recording, and if you want to develop your interests further you can later buy one of the professional programs.Hans is editor of the Audio Howto Section of

Forex Trading Brokers

Author : Eddie Tobey
Foreign Exchange (FOREX) Trading is the simultaneous buying of one currency after selling the currency that you possess. If you want to get ahead in this industry, the usual practice is to employ the services of a broker. In the overall picture, brokers do not handle a whole lot. Each transaction they engage in is actually just a fraction of the total number of transactions that takes place on a daily basis. It is the volume of transactions that makes a big significance in the whole industry.A service that is important to ask for from your broker is the access to 24-hour online updates that allow you to monitor progress anytime of the day. You might also want to look for a broker who does not charge unreasonable commissions.Remember that you might not be able to find a broker that has access to inter-bank markets. Instead, he or she will probably buy or sell the currency from you. There are also brokers that possess leverages as high as a 100-to-1 ration, which gives you more trading room. You should find a broker that is registered under the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), and is a member of the National Futures Association (NFA), because unlike the stock market, FOREX trading is not greatly regulated. You also want to be cautious of brokers who might want to scam you of your currency. CFTC has actually warned of an increase in scam incidents involving FOREX trading. There are opportunistic brokers who manipulate the exchange rate prices and spike the increase just to gain a profit at your expense. And because there are many factors that affect the rise and fall of the market, it is hard to detect such an action. The industry is fairly unregulated, and there are fast-paced changes happening everyday; so it is hard to track down and stop these scammers. Be extra careful.Forex Trading provides detailed information on Forex Trading, Online Forex Trading, Forex Trading Tips, Forex Trading Hours and more. Forex Trading is affiliated with Forex Day Trading Systems.

Hobby or Hinderance?

Author : Will T

Ask a room full of people what hobby they have and you will get
as many answers as there are people. Others will confess that
they don’t have a hobby. They probably do; but just don’t label
it as such. By definition, a hobby is an activity or interest
pursued outside one's regular occupation and engaged in
primarily for pleasure.

Whether stamp collecting, chat rooms, trains, soft ball,
scrapbooking, golf, reading, painting, tap dancing, yard work,
crafts, auto mechanics, music, hunting down garage sales,
sewing, fishing, cooking, boating, furniture refinishing,
javelin tossing or a plethora of other activities or interests
the key element is balance. You must find balance between your
family life and your extracurricular activities.

Too much of a good thing turns bad. Everyone should have an
outlet and a special interest that they enjoy doing for
themselves. Self indulgence, to a point, is quite healthy.
Escaping from day to day grinds to take some time to devote to
your special hobby or concentration is therapeutic. You’ve all
heard, “if Mamma ain’t happy, no one’s happy.” It doesn’t matter
if your role is father, mother, husband, wife, boyfriend,
girlfriend, son, daughter, brother or sister, if you’re just
going to work or school and have no real outside activities,
you’re probably not always the most friendly person to be
around.

Conversely, if you bury yourself and it seems to others that all
you care about or all you ever want to do is bang on the drums
all day, you’re setting yourself up or prolonging discontent.
People deal with depression in many ways. Some sleep all the
time. Others want to do nothing but read, read, read. Still
others will spend hours upon hours downstairs building a bigger,
faster widget, just to avoid the real cause of their
frustrations. Hobbies are supposed to be a healthy outlet, not a
catalyst to ignore issues that need addressing.

Likewise, hobbies can get very expensive. Sure snow mobiles,
motorcycles and ski equipment are obviously expensive. But
sometimes those seemingly low cost activities can add up. You
start out with trying to budget for the monthly karate lessons.
Then you need (or want) the gi, the uniform. Don’t forget about
the protective sparring equipment. Perhaps you think you need to
have a heavy bag or some shields to help you practice. Figure on
$30-$50 per tournament that you enter. Of course there’s the
uninsured medical and orthodontia costs to be calculated in as
well. “Let’s see, do we pay the mortgage this month, so get that
new helmet that you just have to have?”

If your hobby is doing more harm than good, if it’s dipping into
the family budget and time allocation, more than you can or
should be spending, it’s time to reevaluate. If you’re not doing
something outside your standard occupation that you enjoy, it’s
time to find something, for your and your family’s sake!

So, Where is the Greener Grass?

Author : Liz Cassidy

Twenty years ago when I left the Ireland, known as the Emerald Isle, I was looking for the place where the grass is greener. We all know that faraway hills are green, and back then I was searching for my greener pastures so I looked faraway. With a few detours, I arrived in Australia; the Sunburnt country, dry, arid and drought ridden, looking for prosperity. I was looking for the good life of opportunity, beaches, yachts and barbeques. When I had left Ireland, in the days before Viagra and computer chips were the national exports. Before the Celtic Tiger and double digit economic growth, Ireland?s significant exports were its most highly educated and talented doctors scientists, engineers, artists and writers. There weren?t many greener pastures in Ireland back in the early 80?s, before the Northern Irish Peace initiative and its attendant changes when Guinness was still marketed as the drink of choice of old men in the darkest corners of dark pubs. But in the arid country of Australia I came to, in the droughts and El Nino weather patterns; there were golden sporting heroes, golden beaches, golden sunshine, golden chardonnay and no one who knew me. So in this arid land ? my adopted home; I gradually learnt to plant seeds, I got a job, travelled, started my first, second and third businesses, continued to travel, made contacts and learned to network. I learned to sell and planted still more seeds.I continued to cultivate my skills, grow my knowledge and my network all the time planting seeds. Some of the seeds I planted over the years fell on desert sands and died, some fell on fertile ground and began to sprout. The tender young plants getting stronger and gradually the growth seemed to be independent of me, but still I worked at nurturing and tending - feeding and watering - what I had created. I tended to my business and slowly imperceptibly it took root, and grew. With continued careful nurturing, watering and care it flourished. It wasn?t overnight. In many ways it crept up on me?.I looked on the garden I had created, the fruit on the trees, the flowers blossoming and the lushest greenest of lawns, soft and spongy underfoot. I compare the lush and bountiful green I have created in this most arid of lands to the Emerald Isle I left 20 years ago, and I ask - So where is the grass greenest?.?Simple really; The grass is greenest where you plant the seeds and where you water it. Why Do Most Network Marketers Fail?

Author : Chris Brown

Network marketing is Simple, but doing the old way (i.e.cold calling people) is NOT easy.Don't kid yourself!Let me explain my view of why network marketing is notoriousfor having a 95% or higher failure rate..Have you ever heard of Occam's razor? It states that the simplest explanation for a phenomenon isusually the best. We'll use this theory to explain why morethan 95% or more network marketers fail.Ready? Most network marketers fail because the marketing methodsthat they are taught don't work 95% or more of the time.So we're led to ask the next logical question, what are mostfledgling network marketers taught?Well, I can only speak from my experience, but what I wastaught was to buy and cold call leads. Now, I'm not going to say this doesn't work, but I will sayis that after six months of cold calling leads for 3 hours aday with very little success this tactic doesn't work forme.Honestly, unless you're natural born confident sales leadergoing into your network marketing career you'll probablyhave these same results.Don't get me wrong some people are very good at cold callingleads, but most people aren't.What happens to most people after they've spend thousands ofdollars on leads with very little success after months ofeffort? They run out of money. They get burned out and then . . .They give up.Another important factor contributing to why most networkmarketers fail is the type of leads they buy.Why does the type of leads network marketers use make adifference?Well . . .Business opportunity leads, the leads most new networkmarketers are told to use, are generic. These leads answeran ad that just asks them if they want to be financiallyfree or make money from home or something like that.Well . . . of course they do!But that doesn't mean they want anything to do with YOURnetwork marketing program. When the average network marketer calls these genericbusiness opportunity leads the leads don't know anythingabout the network marketer's business and for the most parthonestly don't care. This leads to the fledgling network marketer hearing a lotof "NOs".Hearing NO all the time leads to quite a bit of self doubt, both about the network marketer's own ability and thevalidity of their association with their network marketingcompany.Negative feelings begin to harbor and as I said beforeeventually the network marketer gives up, usually within 3-6months.The fledgling network marketer's perception of theirbusiness goes from one of opportunity to one of completedoubt and negativity.Reality follows perception, so because the fledgling networkmarketer believes both themselves and their business ashaving little hope this becomes TRUE.That's basically why 95% of network marketers fail if youasked me. Tried Network Marketing before and failed? It's not yourfault. Let this rookie "unknown" marketer show you how heembarrassed the "gurus" by placing over 4,120 people in hisdownline in 14 short months, while pocketing over half-a-million dollars. Now he has honed his SYSTEM into an idiot-proof step-by-step can't fail, never-cold-call-againrecruiting machine on steroids! He'll even PAY YOU to checkit out. ==> http://www.cya925.biz
