At the Risk of Being Called a Trekkie.

Author : Aldene Fredenburg

I'm not a Trekkie; I don't go to conventions, I don't wear pointy ears or identify with a particular Star Trek character; I don't collect Star Trek memorabilia or seek out autographs of the various actors on the multiple series or many movies. But it's embarrassing how often I find myself referring to Star Trek in conversation. For instance, a friend of mine and I were discussing just how many of the scientific gizmos used on the series have actually come into being. The communicators used by landing parties to talk to the crew on the Starship? Cell phones! The weapons they carried, set to "stun"? Stun guns. The weapons they carried, set to zap people into oblivion? We call them lasers, and we use them to zap tumors and face jowls into oblivion. Doctor McCoy-Bones-had a little gadget he could use to do full body scans. We have CATscans and MRIs and other diagnostic tools that can look into every part of the human body, including the brain. The deck of the Starship Enterprise was full of computers and large screens and advanced communications that resemble the personal computers, wide screen TVs and other multimedia equipment that we all love.I find myself referring to specific episodes of the original series, as well. Remember the being covered with suction cups with an unquenchable craving for salt that went around attacking people, to suck the salt out of them? I can relate to that. Someone should have handed that thing a bag of potato chips. And the one about the parallel universe, where there was an anti-Starship and an anti-Kirk, and an anti-Spock? And someone-I think it was Spock-said that it's a lot easier for civilized human beings to pretend to be barbarians than it was for barbarians to pretend to be civilized human beings? My friend and I were talking about that episode, and George Bush and Dick Cheney, and their approach to money and war and .Well, let's not get into that.
